A Back Stop is used by companies to guarantee the amount of capital received through an issue.  Basically, the company will get a Back Stop from an underwriter or a large shareholder to buy any of the unsubscribed shares in an offering. This, in turn, provides last resort support for the unsubscribed portion of shares.
